I am Maya & this is my story
A long time ago, when I got my first job that fit my communications degree, I was incredibly excited! I was so proud of my first ‘grown up job’ and the company I got to work for. But unfortunately, that feeling didn’t last long.
I kept making typos and no matter how many times I proofread my own work, I could not get it to be error free. I’ve known I am dyslexic since I was a child, and now became convinced studying and working in comms was the dumbest decision I could have ever made. I thought I would never be good enough and dreaded going to work every single morning.
After already trying to improve my written skills as much as I could, I asked my family doctor if she knew if dyslexia training for adults was a thing, because it was affecting my work and triggering my fear of failure in a mayor way. She didn’t hesitate and immediately wrote me a referral to see a psychologist, besides also promising to look into a dyslexia tutor for adults.
In therapy, I realized that my mistakes don’t define my worth, and learned how to think more realistically and less destructive. This changed my life! I quit my job, and worked a series of other comms jobs with more variation afterward. More confidently, but the excitement for new jobs always faded quickly.
I realized I wasn’t cut out to work 40 hours a week in comms, and wanted to shift to something that came more naturally to me. So, with the help of a career coach, I realized my gentle, compassionate and persistent nature is way more suited to help others in their personal development journey, than work a corporate 9 to 5. And shortly after, I started my coaching training.
So now, since 2021, I have been happily, proudly AND confidently running my own coaching business (including doing my own marketing & comms!), and helping others to see their own self-worth and combatting their imposter syndrome.
